JTAPES Audio Podcast Lamar Creation V1 (10.29.17)

JTAPES Audio Podcast Lamar Creation features an in depth look into Jungle AE’s newest audio engineer. Veteran Jungle audio engineer, Chris House, joins in on the conversation!

JTAPES Audio Podcast Charles Acoba || #JTAPES is a weekly audio podcast released every Sunday featuring Chicago recording artists, producers and engineers recorded out of Chicago recording studio, Jungle AE.

Jungle AE’s newest audio engineer, Lamar Creation, began engineering out of necessity.  When Lamar began recording R&B music, he went to his homie’s “recording studio.”  Homie prices reflect a “homie” studio and the quality was not up to the par Lamar sought.  Because of this, he began to learn how to audio engineer and interned at Insomniac Recording Studios in Chicago south suburbs.  Quickly impressing Jungle AE’s chief engineer, Cruz, with his speed and honesty, Lamar was added to the team.

Lamar’s biggest advice to artist is to always be on time and always be prepared.  Also you need to respect the studio and engineer by making deposits properly on time.

Lamar’s favorite mixed R&B songs are one made by Jhene Aiko.  The atmospheric yet heavy bass combined with airy vocals is a good example to go by for modern day R&B.   Jhene Aiko’s engineers capture that aesthetic perfectly!  For Hip Hop, he gravitates to similar vibe, Rick Ross.  Rick Ross has a similar vibe, but not as atmospheric or airy since it needs to maintain the grittiness of Hip Hop.  If you’re looking for those vibes, definitely hit up Lamar asap to book your recording or mixing session!

Lamar achieves these mixes by using FabFilter’s Pro Q2.  This is by far his favorite plug in, and he is the one that actually convinced Cruz to finally get it for Jungle AE.  It’s a transparent EQ that’s also very precise with a modern feel to it’s GUI.

JTAPES Audio Podcast Charles Acoba V1 (10.15.17)

JTAPES Audio Podcast Charles Acoba features an in depth look into Jungle AE’s co-owner and financial manager. Chief engineer, Cruz, joins in on the conversation!

JTAPES Audio Podcast Charles Acoba || #JTAPES is a weekly audio podcast released every Sunday featuring Chicago recording artists, producers and engineers recorded out of Chicago recording studio, Jungle AE.

Jungle AE Co-Owner and Financial Manager, Charles Acoba, didn’t plan on starting a recording stuido until he claims, Chief Engineer, Excel Cruz, started complaining about not getting hired at any other Chicago recording studio.  After business planning in the line of several stores during Black Friday 2010, Charles developed a hard copy business plan.  They raised money and had a soft opening of the studio in February of 2011, with a grand opening in October of 2011.

In 2013, one of their clients had passed away from a drunk driver smashing into him.  This changed the business practices of both Charles and Cruz.  Charles began to see business as no longer just relationships based on transactions.  He believes the recording studio is not in the business of music, technology or entertainment but in the business of people.  “The only real thing in this world are people,” is a motto that Charles lives by.  This growth and understanding is applied now to his other 4 businesses.

Charles runs multiple businesses all at the same time.  How exactly do you successfully run 5 businesses?  The key is to master your schedule, set your priorities but also be flexible.  The flexibility on time is based on your relationships with the people you do business with.

JTAPES Audio Podcast Cruz V1 (10.08.17)

JTAPES Audio Podcast Cruz features an in depth look into Jungle AE chief engineer. Veteran Jungle audio engineer, House, joins Cruz for the chat!

JTAPES Audio Podcast Cruz || #JTAPES is a weekly audio podcast released every Sunday featuring Chicago recording artists, producers and engineers recorded out of Chicago recording studio, Jungle AE.

Jungle AE chief engineer, Cruz, talks about the humble beginnings of the recording studio.  He wasn’t hired at other studios, and in collaboration with a close friend, they made one of their own!  Sometimes a ‘no’ is meant to happen to open up another door for a new adventurous path that’ll lead to personal growth.   Cruz felt like the work he did for a year in St. Louis would garner him a job in Chicago, but that didn’t happen.  This set back was a set up for a come back with the creation of Jungle AE!  These past 6 years have definitely been an awesome journey.  This origin story is explored more in our JTapes Audio Podcast with business partner Charles Acoba.

What has made Cruz versatile as an audio engineer are his selections of favorite mixes.  Cruz uses Nas’ outro of his 3rd solo album, “Undying Love’, which features strings from a James Bond sample and a full round bass with thumping kicking drums.  The song gives a good example of how to use special effects or foley art within a composition.  Justin Timberlakes “Mirrors” is a good example of how to make a complicated mix (one filled with many instruments and vocal layers) keep its vibe, soul and clarity.  Cruz’s third example is Future’s “If You Know What I Took.”  His go to for trap that maintains an honest soulful energy yet keeps it’s grime and dirt.

Engineering from Nas to Future reveal the differences of New York vs Atlanta.  Cruz spent a lot of time engineering for St. Louis and also Chicago.  Both have their difference and contribute to their “ciry’s sound.”

With over 10 years of total experience between St. Louis and Chicago, Cruz also talk about studio don’ts.  The biggest being hanging your headphones on the microphone stand or shock mount!

JTAPES Audio Podcast Ksenia V1 (9.24.17)

JTAPES Audio Podcast Ksenia

JTAPES Audio Podcast Ksenia features an in depth look into Jungle AE audio engineer, Ksenia.  Chief engineer, Excel Cruz, joins in and asks the questions!

JTAPES Audio Podcast Ksenia || #JTAPES is a weekly audio podcast released every Sunday featuring Chicago recording artists, producers and engineers recorded out of Chicago recording studio, Jungle AE.

Jungle AE engineer of 2 years, Ksenia, knew nothing about audio production before becoming an apprentice to chief engineer, Excel Cruz.  When we mean knew nothing, we mean she didn’t even know what DAW stood for or what Pro Tools was!  She definitely put in the work though and her love for music and love for helping people gave her the motivation to learn something she knew nothing about, and now she has her own clients.

Connecting with her clients is one of her favorite things about audio engineering.  She explains how you need to know your clients personality and be able to read them quickly.  You should be able to tell if they need to be pushed to do another take, or if you need to back off because they are frustrated.  The best engineers know how to get the best performance out of their client.

Ksenia has worked with a lot of independent artists.  Jargon just released an album, and Ksenia recorded and mixed a couple records on his debut project.  She has also got the chance to mix the vocals of Nipsey Hussle since he featured on a track by Cels Dupri called “Survival”.  You can hear that track on the Chicago Riding Music 2017 playlist on YouTube.  Ksenia has already recorded and mixed a couple projects for Cels Dupri.  There are other countless artists who are on the com up that she is working with.

On most of these sessions she is using her favorite plug in, the FabFilter Pro Q2.  She loves the simplicity and the modern feel.  Learn more about Ksenia by listening to this podcast!

JTAPES Audio Podcast House V1 (9.17.17)

jtapes audio podcast house

JTAPES Audio Podcast House features an in depth look into Jungle AE audio engineer, House.  Chief engineer, Excel Cruz, joins in and asks the questions!

JTAPES Audio Podcast House || #JTAPES is a weekly audio podcast released every Sunday featuring Chicago recording artists, producers and engineers recorded out of Chicago recording studio, Jungle AE.

Jungle AE engineer House, began “audio engineering” even before he went to a trade school for it in Chicago.  He didn’t always start off with a love for music, but after being grounded from video games, tv and everything else his mom could think of, somehow listening to music was left of the list.  He found an Outkast album and just listened to that non stop!  That album helped him to appreciate what good sound or good mixing sounds like.

Ironically, years later, House met the drummer for Outkast’s B.O.B.  At first, HOuse sensed a negative vibe but after sharing a conversation, House first impression of the drummer changed.  The drummer is actually our neighbor inside the facility our room is housed in, the Music Garage.

It is these type of conversatios that are important when working with clients.  House explores the psychology of running recording sessions at Chicago recording studio, Jungle AE.  He explains how you have to quickly be able to read an artist.  House is one to not sugarcoat the truth.  Jungle AE pushes their clients to deliver their best performance but at the same time our engineers provide a comfortable atmosphere to stay relaxed and creative.

One creative tool House loves to use is the FabFilter Pro Q-2.  It speeds up workflow and is super accurate to the point where House feels like it’s pretty much cheating.
